States of Matter Vocabulary

TermDefinition
solution A homogeneous mixture that forms when one substance dissolves another.
solute the substance being dissolved
solvent the substance in which the solute dissolves
homogeneous mixture A mixture in which substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture
heterogeneous mixture the substances in the mixture are not evenly mixed
phase changes transitions from one state to another
viscosity a liquid's resistance to flow
colloid A mixture containing small, undissolved particles that do not settle out.
Charles's Law A principle that describes the relationship between the temperature and volume of a gas at constant pressure
Boyle's Law A principle that describes the relationship between the pressure and volume of a gas at constant temperature
Pascal SI unit of pressure
Heat of Vaporization The amount of energy required for the liquid at its boiling point to become a gas
Amorphous Solids A solid made up of particles that are not arranged in a regular pattern and is without form
Heat of Fusion Amount of energy required to change a substance from the solid phase to the liquid phase.
Sublimation the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas
Melting Point The temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid
Boiling Point The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas
Thermal Expansion An increase in the size of a substance when the temperature is increased
suspension mixtures that settle out
Tyndall Effect light scattering by particles in a colloid or in a very fine suspension
solubility the ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent
compound two or more elements that are chemically combines
element a substance that is made entirely from one type of atom
