solution | A homogeneous mixture that forms when one substance dissolves another. |
solute | the substance being dissolved |
solvent | the substance in which the solute dissolves |
homogeneous mixture | A mixture in which substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture |
heterogeneous mixture | the substances in the mixture are not evenly mixed |
phase changes | transitions from one state to another |
viscosity | a liquid's resistance to flow |
colloid | A mixture containing small, undissolved particles that do not settle out. |
Charles's Law | A principle that describes the relationship between the temperature and volume of a gas at constant pressure |
Boyle's Law | A principle that describes the relationship between the pressure and volume of a gas at constant temperature |
Pascal | SI unit of pressure |
Heat of Vaporization | The amount of energy required for the liquid at its boiling point to become a gas |
Amorphous Solids | A solid made up of particles that are not arranged in a regular pattern and is without form |
Heat of Fusion | Amount of energy required to change a substance from the solid phase to the liquid phase. |
Sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas |
Melting Point | The temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid |
Boiling Point | The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas |
Thermal Expansion | An increase in the size of a substance when the temperature is increased |
suspension | mixtures that settle out |
Tyndall Effect | light scattering by particles in a colloid or in a very fine suspension |
solubility | the ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent |
compound | two or more elements that are chemically combines |
element | a substance that is made entirely from one type of atom |
