Basic Stair Layout Trade Terms

TermDefinition
Closed Stairway Stairway that has solid walls on both sides
Geometrical Stairway A winding stairway with an elliptical or circular design
Landing A horizontal area between two flights of stairs
Open Stairway A stairway that is open on at least one side
Riser A vertical board under the tread of a stairway
Stairway The complete set of stairs extending from one level to another on a structure
Tread The horizontal member of a stairway in which a person steps
Baluster Upright support for railing
Balustrade A stair rail assembly consisting of a handrail, balusters and posts
Handrail rail supported by a wall or post to provide a handhold
Headroom The vertical distance between the stairway and the ceiling
Housed Stringer Support fastened to the stringer
Newel Post The upright post at the top or bottom of a stairway supporting the railing
Nosing The portion of the stair tread that extends beyond the face of the riser
Skirtboard A baseboard located at the bottom of a stairway
Stinger The inclined member that supports the treads and risers of the stairway
Rise and Run The vertical distance in relation to the horizontal distance
Pitch Board A board that serves as a pattern for cutting accurate runners
