Unit 6: Expressions, Equations, Properties of Operations

TermDefinition
variable a letter or symbol representing a varying quantity, for example, n in 10 + n.
constant a quantity having a fixed value that does not change or vary, such as a number.
coefficient a number which multiplies a variable.
expression one or a group of terms and may include variables, constants, operators and grouping symbols.
equation a mathematical statement containing an equals sign, to show that two expressions are equal.
term one part of an algebraic expression which may be a number, a variable or a product of both.
associative property in addition and multiplication, no matter how the numbers are grouped, the answer will always be the same.
commutative property in addition and multiplication, numbers may be added or multiplied together in any order.
identity property of addition adding zero won't change a number
identity property of multiplication multiplying by 1 won't change a number.
inverse property of addition any number added to its opposite will equal zero a + (-a) = 0
inverse property of multiplication any number multiplied by its reciprocal will equal 1 a x 1/a = 1
distributive property multiplying a number is the same as multiplying its addends by the number, then adding the products.
exponent a small number placed to the upper-right of a base number which shows how many copies of the base number are multiplied together.
base a number to be raised to a power, exponent, index or order
prime factorization a number written as the product of its prime factors
prime number a whole number that has exactly two whole number factors, itself and one.
order of operations the order in which mathematical operations should be done, P-E-MD-AS
