TermDefinition
Machine A tool that allows us to use force in a convenient way
Worm A special type of gear that has its ratio measured by the angle of the threads
Ramp Used to make pulling something with wheels up a step
Work Amount of force it takes to move an object combined with the distance it moves
Winch A machine that uses a combination or an axle and a lever and is used to lift objects like a bucket out of a well
Gear ratio Two gears connected by a chain, where the large gear turns once and the small gear turns two or more times
Lever A simple machine that uses a fulcrum point
Power The measurement of how much work something can do in a certain amount of time
Newton-meters Measurement scientists use to measure work
Inclined planes Examples of this include ramps, screws, and winding roads
Light Visible energy
Potential Stored energy that does not move
Chemical Energy that is stored in chemicals, such as the energy stored in a battery
Energy The ability to do work
Conservation of Energy The fact that energy can never be created or destroyed
Heat engine A machine that coverts heat energy into mechanical energy
Orbit A repeating path in space that one object takes around another
Neap tide When the sun and moon are not lined up resulting in less pull on the water which makes the tides less dramatic
Simple machine Screwdrivers, pliers, and ramps are examples of this type of machine
Compound machine This is made up of several simple machines
Fulcrum The point where a lever is supported, also known as the pivot point
First-class lever A lever whose fulcrum point is in between the input and output forces; examples include scissors, pliers, and crowbars
Second-class lever A lever whose fulcrum point is at one end with the output force in the middle and the input force at the other end; examples include nutcrackers and wheelbarrows
Third-class lever A lever whose fulcrum point is at one end with the input force in the middle and the output force at the other end; examples include BBQ tongs and tweezers
Solar system The sun and everything that travels and orbits around it
Kinetic The energy of motion
Mechanical A type of energy that is in something that moves
Heat A type of energy that is in moving molecules
Electrical A type of energy that is in moving electrons
Light A type of energy, visible or invisible, that comes from the sun or another light-generating object, such as a light bulb or fire

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
