term | a single mathematical expression. It may be a single number (positive or negative), a single variable (a letter), several variables multiplied but never added or subtracted |
Coefficient | number in front of a variable |
like terms | Terms that contain the same variables raised to the same power. |
simplify | to write an expression or fraction in a simpler form |

Factoring | rewriting an expression as the product of its factors. undoing distribution |
isolate | to separate from others |
Variable | A symbol used to represent a quantity that can change |
inverse | opposite |
operation | addition, subtraction, multiplication, division |
Solution | an answer to a problem. a single number (NOT an expression) |
evaluate | To replace variables with numbers and then simplify an expression. a single number answer (NOT an expression). |
algebra | A branch of mathematics that involves expressions with variables and symbols. |
two-step equation | An equation that contains two operations. Example: 2n + 8 = 12 |
constant | A term without a variable. A quantity that does not change, it is usually a number. |
algebraic expression | Mathematical combination of variables, numbers and at least one operation. Example: 5n + 7 |
