5-2Light interaction

Interactions of Light unit 5-2

QuestionAnswer
Matter that allows ALL light to pass. Transparent
How does light interact with matter? Light is either REFLECTED, ABSORBED OR BOTH
Objects are clearly seen through _______________ materials. Transparent
Matter that allows some light to pass, scatters light. Translucent
Matter that does not let any light pass is ......... Opaque
What type of matter does the most absorption of light? Opaque
The bouncing of light off a surface is called? Reflection
Light reflects better off of __________________ surfaces Smooth, Shiny
______________ surfaces reflects light in many directions. Rough
Name the two angles of reflected light. Angle of incidence and reflection
During reflection, what is the name of the light going into the surface? Incidence
During reflection, what is the name of the light bouncing off the surface? Reflection
When light strikes an opaque surface, what determined the color we see? Color reflected
When light strikes an opaque, white surface we see what color? White
Why do we see white when light strikes a solid white surface? All colors are reflected.
Why do we see black when light strikes a solid black surface? All colors are absorbed
When light is transmitted through an object what determines the color we see? The color that passes through the object
When light is transmitted through an object what happens to the colors we can not see? They are absorbed.
Besides being absorbed or reflected, name 3 other interactions light waves can have with matter. Slow, bend and scatter.
What means a change in the direction of light as it enters another medium. (Also known as bending light.) Refraction
When light enters a new medium what changes? Light speed, slows
What wavelength of light bends more when as it enters a new medium? Shorter wavelengths, violet end
What wavelength of visible light bends less as it enters a new material. Longer wavelengths, red end
when light hits matter/particles and sends them in many directions it __________________ light. Scatter
What light is scattered the most as it comes in our atmosphere. Blue
Occasionally we have a reddish color sky at sunset, WHY? At sunset the visible light passed through more atmosphere than normal allowing the longest wavelength of light, RED, to enter.
Matter that transmits light is? Transparent of translucent
matter that transmits NO light is? Opaque
Why does the frog in our lesson appear green? It reflects green color
Why does refraction occur? Due to the change in wave speed.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
