TermDefinition
expression A mathematical phrase that contains operations, numbers, and/or variables.
like terms Terms that contain the same variables raised to the same power.
coefficient A number multiplied by a variable in an algebraic expression
constant In Algebra, a fixed value. A number on its own, or sometimes a letter that stands for a fixed number. In linear equations, y = mx + b, it is b.
variable A symbol or letter used to represent a quantity that can change.
equation A statement that two expressions are equivalent. For example, 3 x 9 = 27 and 8x=10.
percent A ratio that compares a number to 100. The number of parts per 100.
constant of proportionality The unit rate in a proportional relationship
complex fraction A fraction that contains a fraction in its numerator, denominator, or both
ratio The quantitative relation between two amounts showing the number of time one value contains or is contained in the other
percent change A ratio that compares the amount of change to the original amount
percent error a ratio that describes how far an estimate is from the actual amount.
mark-up a percent added to the cost of an item to determine the selling price
mark-down a deduction from the original cost of an item or service
simple interest interest that is applied to the initial amount only
principal the original amount borrowed for a loan or the original amount invested
