Topic 6: Waves and Information Technologies

TermDefinition
electric circuit a complete, unbroken path through which electrical charges can flow
voltage the difference in electrical potential energy per charge between two places in a circuit
resistance the measurement of how difficult is it for charges to flow through an object
Ohm's law the law that states that resistance in a circuit is equal to voltage divided by current
series circuit an electric circuit in which all parts are connected one after another along one path
parallel circuit an electric circuit in which different parts of the circuit are on separate branches
wave a disturbance that transfers energy from place to place; the movement of energy through a body of water
mechanical wave a wave that requires a medium through which to travel
transverse wave a wave that moves the medium at right angles to the direction in which the wave travels
longitudinal wave a wave that moves the medium in a direction parallel to the direction in which the wave travels
amplitude the height of a transverse wave from the center to a crest or trough; the maximum distance the particles of a medium move away from their rest positions as a longitudinal wave passes through the medium
wavelength the distance between two corresponding parts of a wave, such as the distance between two crests
frequency the number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time
electronic signal information that is sent as a pattern in a controlled flow of current through a circuit
electromagnetic signal information that is sent as a pattern of electromagnetic waves, such as visible light, microwaves, and radio waves
digital signal a signal that allows for a record of numerical values of an action set of continuous time intervals
analog signal a signal that allows for a continuous record of some kind of action
pixel a small, uniform shape that is combined with other pixels to make a larger image
information technology computer and telecommunication hardware and software that store, transmit, receive, and manipulate information
software programs that encode, decode, and interpret information
noise random signals from the environment that can alter the output of a signal
bandwidth the amount of information that can be transmitted in bits per second
crest highest point on a transverse wave
trough lowest point on a transverse wave

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
