Matter and Energy

Flow of Matter and Energy Throughout Ecosystems

TermDefinition
10% Energy Rule when energy is passed in an ecosystem from one trophic level to the next, only ten percent of the energy will be passed on
Abiotic Factor Any nonliving part of the environment with which an organism might interact
Autotroph an organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide.
Biotic Factor Any living part of the environment with which an organism might interact
Carnivore A consumer that eats only animals.
Competition for Resources In crowded populations, increasing population density intensifies competition for resources and results in a lower birth rate
Decomposer An organism that breaks down wastes and dead organisms
Detrivore organism that feeds on plant and animal remains and other dead matter
Ecological Pyramid diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy or matter within each trophic level in a food chain or food web
Ecosystem A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Flow of Energy the arrows between organisms in a food chain or food web that show the flow of energy. The arrow points to the organism that is receiving the energy
Flow of Matter A continuous cycle of which matter changes forms and changes back again to sustain life on Earth.
Food Chain A series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy.
Food Web A community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains
Herbivore A consumer that eats only plants.
Heterotroph An organism that cannot make its own food.
Invasive Species species that enter new ecosystems and multiply, harming native species and their habitats
Omnivore An animal that eats both plants and animals
Organism A living thing
Primary Consumer An organism that eats producers
Secondary Consumer An organism that eats primary consumers
Species A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring.
Trophic Level Each step in a food chain or food web

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
