Term | Definition |
---|---|
Area | The size of a surface. The amount of space inside the boundary of a flat (2-dimensional) object such as a triangle or circle. Ex. rug, lawn, etc. |
Area of a Rectangle Formula | Area = Length x Width |
Area of a Triangle Formula | Area = ½ x Base x Height Or Base x Height ÷ 2 |
Area of Composite Shape | A figure made up of two or more other figures. Break the shape into two or more shapes, calculate the area of each shape and then add (or subtract) them. |
Pi | The ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter. |
Radius (r) | A straight line that starts from the center of a circle to the circumference. Half of the diameter. |
Diameter (d) | A straight line to measure the distance across a circle going through the center. 2 times the radius. |
Circumference of a Circle (c) | The distance around the outside of a circle. C= 2 x pi x r OR C = pi x d |
Area of a Circle (a) | Amount of space within a circle. A = pi x r^2 |
Volume | The amount of 3-dimensional space an object occupies. Capacity. |
Triangular Prism | A prism with the cross section of a triangle. V = ½ B X H X L |
Composite Figure | Consists of two or more simple three-dimensional figures, such as prisms, cones, spheres and cylinders. |
Complementary Angle | Two angles that add up to 90 degrees. C = Corner |
Supplementary Angle | Two angles that add up to 180 degrees. S = Straight Line |
