Ch 28 Estimating All

estimate /damage report /appraisal calculates the cost of parts, materials, and labor for repairing a collision damaged vehicle
damage analysis involves locating all damage using a systematic series of inspections, measurements and tests.
direct damage occurs in the area of immediate impact as a direct result of the vehicle striking an object. Direct damage is usually easy to locate and analyze.
indirect damage is caused by the shock of collision forces traveling through the body and inertial forces acting upon the rest of the unibody. Indirect damage can be more difficult to completely identify and analyze.
steering wheel center check involves making sure the steering wheel has not been moved off center due to part damage.
jounce/rebound steering gear check involves pushing down on the front or rear of the vehicle to load the suspension, and then allowing the vehicle to bounce back up.
wheel run out check will show if there is damage to a rotating part of a wheel assembly.
collision estimating and reference guides help with filling out an estimate
R&I to remove and install
R&R means to remove and replace.
Overhaul to remove an assembly from the vehicle, disassemble, clean, inspect, replace parts as needed, reassemble, install and adjust.
Included operations are those that can be performed individually, but are also part of another operation.
Overlap occurs when replacement of one part duplicates some labor operation required to replace an adjacent part.
manually written estimate is done longhand by filling in information on a printed form
electronic/computer written estimate is done using a personal computer and printer
Firm bid the amount on an estimate for a given period of time
deductible clause the owner is responsible for the first given amount of the estimate
work order outlines the procedures that should be taken to put the vehicle in top condition.
flat rate a present amount of time and money charged for a specific repair operation
computerized estimating uses a PC and may provide more accurate and consistent damage reports
PC personal computer
estimating program is software that will automatically help find parts needed, labor rates and calculate total cost of the repairs.
front clip a term that includes front bumper, supports, grilles, radiator, supporting members, hood and hinges, front fenders and all the lights.
Sectioning involves cutting off the damaged part and welding on a new one.
total loss occurs when the cost of repairs would exceed the value of the vehicle.
