QuestionAnswer
Which part of the cell cycle does Growth Phase and Synthesis Phase fall on? The Interphase
What happens during the Growth Phase? The cell is growing and is developing its organelles.
What happens during the Synthesis Phase? The chromosomes replicate in the nucleus (chromosomes double).
What happens during prophase? The centrioles move to opposite poles and the nucleus envelope disappears. Chromosomes coil up into visible structures.
How many pairs of chromosomes are there in Metaphase? There are 46 pairs of chromosomes in a Metaphase.
What happens during anaphase? The spindle fibres retract and pull half the chromosomes towards each centriole.
What happens during telophase The spindle fibre are back in the centrioles and the nuclear envelope starts to form back around both sets of chromosomes.
What is the first cell checkpoint? Lack of nutrients to support growth.
What is the second cell checkpoint? The DNA strands have not been replicated or have been damaged.
What is the third cell checkpoint? The chromosomes have not attached themselves to the spindle fibres and have not moved to opposite poles during anaphase.
What happens during metaphase? The spindle fibres will attach on to the chromosomes and line them up in the middle.
How does cytokinesis work? The cell membrane pinches off in the middle and separates into 2 daughter cells.
Why does apoptosis happen? Cells grow too old that they stop functioning properly (organelle responsible is lysosomes)
What are cancer cells? Cancer cells can undergo Mitosis an unlimited number of times.
How does tumor form? Tumor can form when cells start to divide uncontrollably to the point that they clump together.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
