Cells & Diffusion

Part A

TermDefinition
Nucleus Found in BOTH cells - Controls all activities of cell; growth & reproduction
Cell Membrane Found in BOTH cells - Allows for certain molecules to go in & out of cell - Molecules diffuse in or out of cell; made of 2 phosphorus layers interconnected
Cell Wall Found in PLANT cells - Supports + protects cell; does not allow molecules in or out
Chromosomes Found in BOTH cells - Proteins that contain DNA which have coded information for making molecules
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum Found in BOTH cells - Produces & stores proteins
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum Found in BOTH cells - Produces & stores fats + oils
Golgi Bodies Found in BOTH cells - AKA Golgi Apparatus - Modifies & packages proteins from Rough E.R. with enzymes
Ribosomes Found in BOTH cells - Helps Rough E.R. make proteins + is attached to Rough E.R.
Centrioles Found in ANIMAL cells - Helps with cell Diffusion (mitosis) - Spindle fibers come from here
Mitochondria Found in BOTH cells - Converts sugar into energy for cell
Cytoplasm Found in BOTH cells - Fluid in cell; allows organelles to move around
Vacuole Found in BOTH cells - Stores water, minerals & vitamins - Much bigger in Plant cells
Lysosomes Found in ANIMAL cells - Breaks down food, invading bacteria & old/damaged organelles
Chloroplasts Found in PLANT cells - Uses sunlight to make its own food using Photosynthesis - CO2 + H2O + light --- sugar (glucose) + O2
Diffusion - Movement of molecules from areas of higher concentration to lower concentration
Osmosis - Movement of water molecules from higher concentration of water to lower concentration of water
Permeable - Allows any molecule to diffuse across Membrane
Semi - Permeable - Allows certain molecules to diffuse across Membrane EX. Cell membrane
Non - Permeable - Allows no molecules to diffuse across Membrane EX. Cell Wall

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
