Part C:
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is the difference between the growth phase and the synthesis phase? | The growth phase involves the physical growth in size of the cell but the synthesis phase involves the doubling of chromosomes. |
What happens during the Prophase? | The centrioles move to the poles of the cell and the nuclear envelope disappears while the chromosomes coil up into visible structures. |
What happens during the metaphase? | Spindle fibers spun by the Centrioles attach themselves onto the centromeres of the chromosomes. |
What happens during the Ananphase? | The spindle fibers retract and pull half of the chromosomes to one side and the other half to the other side of the cell. |
What happens during the Telophase? | Spindle fibers return back into the centrioles and new nuclear envelopes form around the (now) separated bundles of chromosomes. |
How many cell check points are there? | There are three cell check points. |
What happens during the first cell check point? | The cell checks to see if it has sufficient nutrients in order to support growth. |
What happens during the second cell check point? | The cell checks to see if any DNA strands have not been replicated or are damaged. |
What happens during the third cell check point? | The cell checks to see if any chromosomes have not connected to spindle fibers and have not moved to the opposite poles. |
What happens to the cell if any of the cell check points are not fulfilled? | The cell will kill itself. |
What happens during Cytokenises | The cell membrane pinches off in the middles of the two new nuclei, separating it into 2 new daughter cells. |
What is apoptosis | Apoptosis is when a cell uses Lysosomes to kill itself. |
Why would a cell go through apoptosis? | If a cell is damaged beyond repair or has been infected by a virus or bacteria, it will go through apoptosis (kill itself) |
How many times can cancer cells go through mitosis? | Cancer cells can go through mitosis an unlimited number of times. |
How is cancer related to tumors? | When cancer cells uncontrollably divide, they clump together and start to form a visible clump which is a tumor. |
