Chem Unit 9 Test

Flashcards for the general knowledge section of the chem unit 9 test.

QuestionAnswer
What is Acid-Base Titration? Procedure used to determine the concentration of an acid or base using a standard acid or base.
What is a Standard Solution? Solution whose concentration is known precisely. A standard solution is used to neutralize an acid/base of unknown concentration.
What does an acid + base make? H2O + salt
What is the equivalence point? The equivalence point point in a titration where mol H+ = mol OH- (neutralization). (Acid = base)
What is an indicator? Equivalence points can be detected using an acid-base indicator. Indicators change color at certain pH levels.
What is an endpoint during titration? Point in titration where the indicator changes color.
What is a hydronium ion? H3O+
What is a strong acid? Acids that dissociate nearly completely.
What is a weak acid? Acids that do not dissociate to great extent.
What does pOH stand for? “power of the hydroxide ion”
What do acids do? Donates protons (H+)
What do bases do? Accepts protons.
What is a conjugate base? What's left of the acid after it has donated a proton.
what is a conjugate acid? What's formed after the base has accepted a proton.
What does Amphoteric? A subject that can act as both an acid or a base is called amphoteric. H2O is an example of this.
What does brackets represent? Brackets around a species represents concentration in molarity (M).
What is the Kw constant? [H+][OH-] = 1.0 * 10^-14. Kw is called the “water dissociation constant”
Neutral solution? [H+] = [OH-]
Acidic solution? [H+] > [OH-]
Basic solution? [H+] < [OH-]
What does pH stand for? “power of the Hydrogen ion”
What is the pH scale based on? The pH scale is a logarithmic scale based on the power of 10 (log10)
What is molarity? The number of moles of solute dissolved in total liters of solution. Expressed in units of mol/L or M.
What color does cabbage turn distilled water? Purple
What is the tool used for titration called? A buret
When the solution containing phenolphthalein turns pink during titration, is it being mixed with an acid or a base? A base, during a titration lab you go from acid to base.
Acid reacts with many ____ to produce ____ . metals, H2 gas
Acid reacts with ____ to produce ____ . Carbonates, CO2 gas
