pathogens | any foreign organism or virus that can cause infection or disease in an organism |
antibodies | proteins created and released by the white blood cells that either attack and destroy pathogens, or label them for easier identification by other white blood cells |
fever | increased body temperature that is the result of your body attempting to kill off infection by heat |
red blood cells | type of blood cell that carries oxygen to cells for the process of cellular respiration to take place |
nonspecific | the type of defenses of the immune system |
white blood cells | type of blood cell that helps to fight infection |
disease | the breakdown of the normal function of the body |
phagocytosis | the process where the white blood cells surround, engulf, and destroy pathogens |
immunity | the ability of out body to resist disease |
memory cells | white blood cells that function to remember a pathogen so that it can be recognized and quickly eliminated if it infects the body a second time |
enzymes | protein catalysts found in tears, sweat, saliva that have the ability to break down the cell walls of bacteria |
antigens | any foreign particle (thing) that is able to trigger an immune response |
homeostasis | the condition of internal stability of an organism that can get disrupted due to disease or illness |
specific | the characteristic of antibodies that means that each type of antibody can only recognize a certain type of antigen |
Active immunity (long term) | immunity produced by sickness or vaccination |
vaccination | the injection of a dead or weakened disease or a form of a pathogen to produce immunity |
passive immunity (short term) | temporary immunity obtained by receiving antibodies from another organism |
allergies | the overreaction of the immune system |
histamines | chemicals released by WBC's that increase blood flow to an infected area, causes watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, and other irritations |
AIDS | Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome |
Antihistamines | drugs that counteract the effect of histamines |
HIV | Human Immunodeficiency Virus |
Immune System | helps to protect the body against disease and illness |
