Energy Ch 4,5,9

Mrs. Brandt's 8th grade Science

QuestionAnswer
- What is work? Work is accomplished when a force moves an object a distance.
-What form of energy moves objects like buses? mechanical energy
-What form of energy is related to the movement of particles that make up matter? heat energy
-What is chemical energy? It is a form of energy that is stored in food and fuels.
-What form of energy is because of the movement of electrons? Electrical energy
-What type of energy does the sun produce? radiant energy
-What form of energy is from the nucleus or center of the atom? nuclear energy
-What form of energy comes from a speaker at a concert? sound energy
-What is energy? the ability to do work
-What is the energy of motion? kinetic energy
-What is the SI unit for work and energy? Joule
-Give an example of work. Picking up a book that has been dropped OR walking to class
-What kind of energy does a slingshot being held back and ready to fire have? elastic potential energy
-Give an example of chemical potential energy. Fuel used in a cruise liner
-What is geothermal energy? an energy resource that uses the heat of the Earth
-What is a nonrenewable resource? a resource that cannot be replaced
-Give 3 examples of a nonrenewable resource. coal, oil, natural gas, propane, uranium
-What is a renewable resource? a resource that can be replaced
-Give 3 examples of a renewable resource. solar, geothermal, hydropower, biomass, wind
-What are fossil fuels? come from dead plants and animals that were buried 300 million years ago
-Name 3 problems that occur with the burning of fossil fuels. pollution, acid rain, global warming, they will run out
-Give 3 examples of ways that an individual can conserve energy. turning off lights as you exit room, taking awhower instead of a bath, recycling, riding a bike, walking
-Why is it important to conserve energy? fossils fuels are nonrenewable, current technology is not advanced enough to effectively use all renewable sources that are available
-What is the Law of Conservation of Energy? energy may change from one form to another but the total amount of energy never changes
-Explain, using the Law of Conservation of Energy, what happens when you plug a blow dryer into the wall. plugged into the wall uses electricity which causes the device to turn it into heat energy. Energy form has changed but not the amount.
Energy that is stored; the energy of position Potential Energy
When a pendulum is released to swing, it has this kind of energy Kinetic Energy
An object held up above the surface of the ground has this. Gravitational Potential Energy
The higher an object is above the ground. The more gravitational potential energy the object has.
Petroleum, natural gas, and coal are all this: Fossil Fuels (Nonrenewable Resources)
A fuel made from renewable organic material from plants or animals Biomass Fuels
Electricity produced by combining Hydrogen and Oxygen gases with water as a byproduct Hydrogen Fuel Cells
Electricity produced when falling or running water turns a generator. Hydropower or Hydroelectricity
What is a disadvantage or using this form of power? Hydroelectricity can disturb natural ecosystems, because dams are often built to control it.
Electricity produced when wind turns a propeller which then turns a generator. Wind power
What are the advantages of using wind power? Wind power is clean, inexpensive and available everywhere.
What are the disadvantages of using wind power? The wind must be blowing. Large wind farms produce noise, and may have ecological effects.
Electricity generated by sunlight hitting a photovoltaic cell Solar power
What is the fuel most often used for this form of energy? Uranium
The formula for kinetic energy KE (J) = 1/2 m (kg) x v2 (m2/s2)
The formula for gravitational potential energy GPE (J) = m(kg) x 9.8 m/s2 x h (m)
The formula for Work Work = Force * distance
According to the law of conservation of energy, what is true about the total amount of energy in the universe? The total amount of energy in the universe remains CONSTANT.
Sulphuric acid mixes with water vapor to make this. Acid ran
What gas produced by burning fossil fuels is thought to lead to global warming? Carbon dioxide
What is the biggest problem with our continued use of fossil fuels? Fossil fuels are a nonrenewable resource.
