terms | Definitions |

oral tradition | passing along songs, poems, stories, etc. from parent to child for many years by word of mouth |
paraphrase | looking at written work and putting it into your own words |
persuasion | author tries to get the reader to believe their opinion or to take some kind of action |
plot | the "events" in a short story novel or play |
poetry | language, sounds, images and rhythm combine to create emotion in this type of imaginative writing |
prose | kind of writing used in short stories, nonfiction, journalism, etc. |
purpose | author's intention (reason) or goal for writing a particular work |
refrain | a line or group of lines in some songs/poetry that a repeated regularly (chorus) |
repetition | use of sounds, words, phrases over and over again repeatedly |
resolution | the part of a plot that presents the final outcome (where a problem might be solved) |
rhyme | repeating the same or similar sounds in words that appear close to each other ina poem (cat, hat) |
rhythm | the beat in poetry |
run-on-line | in poetry where meaning continues beyond the line (no period) |
