Batterbee Bio U1 Voc

Vocabulary for Unit One in Batterbee's Biology class @ DHS

QuestionAnswer
biology the study of life
organism any living thing
Unifying Themes of Biology Cell Structure & Function; Stability & Homeostasis; Reproduction & Inherritance; Evolution; Interdependence of Organisms; Matter, Energy, & Organization
Cell Structure & Function Cells are made a certain way, and do certain jobs.
Stability & Homeostasis All living things maintain the internal conditions that are best for their survival.
Reproduction & Inherritance Living things are able to create new individuals with traits passed along from parents.
Evolution All living things change over time in response to their environment.
Interdependence of Organisms Living things rely on living and non-living factors in the environment to survive.
Matter, Energy, & Organization Living and non-living factors constantly cycle through the environment.
Six Characteristics of Living Things Made of cells; Organized at the molecular & cellular level; use energy to survive; have metabolism to process food that they eat or produce; maintain the internal conditions for survival (homeostasis); they grow through cell division; they reproduce.
Homeostasis Maintaining the internal conditions that are best for the survival of an organism.
Metabolism Getting energy through creating or eating food, then eliminating waste products.
Hypothesis an explanation based on many observations and collecting data.
Independent Variable (I.V.) In a scientific investigation, the part of the experiment that the researcher is changing.
Dependent Variable (D.V.) In a scientific investigation, the part of the experiment that the researcher is measuring to find the effect of what has been changed.
Control The baseline for an experiment, where no conditions have been changed.
Constant The aspects of an experiment or study that the researcher keeps the same across all trials and samples.
Trials The number of times that a specific set of conditions is duplicated in an experiment or study. The more trials carried out, the more reliable the information becomes.
Title A summary statement for an experiment or study. It always takes the form of: "The effect of (the Independent Variable) on (the Dependent Variable)."
Data Information you are able to collect. This is usually counted in some way.
Observation Any information that can be seen, sensed, or detected directly.
Inference Any information that you can figure out based what you learn. This is a guess or prediction, NOT information that you sensed directly.
Quantitative Data Data that is based on numbers. This includes anything that is counted. This is usually very precise information.
Qualitative Data Data that is NOT based on numbers. These tend to be more opinions, and usually less precise.
Samples The number of different sets of conditions in an experiment or study.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
