salinity | amount of salt in seawater (average is 35 parts per 1000) |
convection currents | warm material rising, cooling and sinking down where it reheats and rises again making circular currents (found in atmosphere, ocean water, tectonic plate movement) |
spring tides | type of tides that occur when the sun and moon form a straight line, we have higher high tides and lower low tides |
neap tides | type of tides that occur when the sun and moon form a right angle(Earth at center), we have lower high tides and higher low tides |
estuary | an area where salt and fresh water mix, also called a sound or a bay |
tide | periodic rise and fall of the ocean level caused by the moon's gravitational pull, 2 high and 2 low tides generally occur each day |
wave | wind causes water to crash into the shore every few seconds |
