Biology-Cytoskeleton

Information about the cytoskeleton in cells

QuestionAnswer
What is the cytoskeleton made of? Many protein filaments.
What do microtubules do? Organize the inside of the cell and form a dynamic framework that moves the structures to specific locations.
How does the poison from the crocus plant affect animals? When an animal eats this plant, their cells can't divide and they die, because the poison blocks microtubule assembly.
How does the drug taxol kill cancer cells? It can stop the uncontrolled cell divisions that cause some cancers.
What is the main role of the microfilaments? To form flexible, linear bundles and networks that reinforce and restructure the cell surface.
_______ filaments are the most stable parts of some cytoskeletons and they also help to maintain cell ________. Intermediate, Structures.
If in an analogy, the microtubules and microfilaments where the train tracks in a busy city, what would the train engines be? Kinesins, dyneins, myosins and other motor proteins.
Some motor proteins, such as _kinesins_ in plants, move _chloroplasts_ from one position to another to take advantage of sunlight striking the leaf. True/False? True.
What kind of motor proteins are responsible for aiding in muscle contraction in animal cells? Myosins.
What do the flagella and cilia look like (both are motile structures that project from the cell surface)? The fragella is longer and not as profuse as cilia.
What type of structure do sperm use to "swim" and what do they look like? Cilia structure. They are a short structure.
Which type of motile structure do you have in the airways to your lungs and what is their job? Cilia. Their job is to sweep out airborne bacteria and particles that might reach the lungs.
