The Bill of Rights the first 10 amendments, added because the founding fathers wanted to safe guard certain rights
Limits of the 1st Amendment Slander: spoken lies about someone that hurts their reputation, cannot create a clear and present danger, and Libel: Written lies about someone
Probable Cause reasonable belief that a particular person has committed a particular crime
Self-incrimination you do not have to tell on yourself
Double Jeopardy cannot be tried for the same crime twice
Eminent Domain government must pay you for property they use
Equal Protection of the Law cannot take away life, liberty, and property
Responsibilities of Citizens voting, being informed, taking part in government, helping in the community, respecting others and protecting their rights
Duties of citizens obey the laws, attend school, pay taxes, serve in military, appearing in court
Immunity protection or exemption from something
Reprieve cancel or postpone the punishment
Pardon forgive or excuse
Original Jurisdiction The authority to be the first court to hear a case and rule on it
Bail the temporary release of an accused person awaiting trial
Article 6 Both State & Federal officials, including judges, must take an oath to support the Constitution, even if state law contradicts it.
Article 7 9 States sufficient for ratification of the U.S. Constitution
