Inclusion | students with special educational needs spend most or all of their time with non-disabled students |
IEP (Individual Education Plan) | a written document that details a specialized education plan for a learning disabled child including learning difficulties & accommodations (USA) |
Hearing impairment | Hearing loss exists when there is diminished sensitivity to the sounds normally heard |
Visual Impairment | is vision loss (of a person) to such a degree as to qualify as an additional support need through a significant limitation of visual capability |
Intellectual disability | is a broad concept encompassing various intellectual deficits, including mental retardation |
EBD(Emotional and Behavior Disorder) | a child’s problems are due to a combination of factors affecting development – biological, environmental, psychological |
Giftedness | intellectual ability significantly higher than average child, it may be general or specific. |
Physical Disability | any body related impairment or dysfunction that causes learning or mobility needed for learning to be more difficult than usual. |
Regulation 504 | a federal law designed to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities that receive Federal financial assistance |
Accommodation | changing the way in which instruction is delivered or changing the way in which a student is expected to respond to instruction |
ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) (began in 1990-roots in the Civil Rights Act of 1964) | a federal law that came into effect in 1992 and forbids discrimination against persons who are disabled. |
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) | significant difficulties of inattention or hyperactivity and impulsiveness or a combination of the two that hinder learning |
BIP (Behavior Intervention Plan) | A written, specific, purposeful plan which describes positive behavioral interventions and supports and strategies that will be implemented to address goals for a student’s social, emotional, and behavioral development. |
FAPE (Free and Appropriate Public Education) (part of the rehabilitation Act of 1973) | requires that a person with a disability who is in the school district’s jurisdiction, regardless of the nature or severity of the disability be provided an education. |
Learning Disability | A condition that causes difficulties in acquiring knowledge and skills to the normal level expected of those of the same age. |
Dyslexia | difficulty recognizing & thinking about specific sounds, difficulty decoding letters, rhyming, spelling and reading in general |
Dysgraphia | difficulty gripping and writing, forming letters, organizing written expression, difficulty with sentence formation and structure. |
Auditory Processing Deficit | difficulty distinguishing sounds, remembering what was said, keeping pace with spoken instructions, spelling, reading and writing. |
IEP Team | the group consisting of the student, parent, teachers, counselor, and case manager that meet yearly to make the best decisions for the students benefit, |
