America in the Twenty-first Century

power | The ability to influence behavior |
authority | Power that is accepted by society as legally and morally correct |
public services | Essential services that individuals cannot provide for themselves |
institution | An organization meant to perform functions for society |
social conflict | Conflict over what society's priorities should be |
politics | The process of resolving conflicts and distributing scarce resources according to societal priorities |
autocracy | A form of government in which one person holds all the government's power and authority |
monarchy | A form of autocracy in which a king/queen/etc. takes the chief position of governmental power and authority |
divine right theory | The idea that monarchs' power and authority were confirmed (and protected from criticism) by God's power and authority |
dictatorship | One person holds a position of absolute power/authority (usu. by force) |
democracy | Government that assigns ultimate political authority to the people |
direct democracy | Decisions are made by the people themselves, not by elected representatives |
representative democracy | Representatives express the will of the majority |
republic | A representative democracy where there is no monarch and the people are sovereign |
limited government | Government based on the idea that power should be limited by a written document and/or wide public understanding |
parliament | National legislative body in Britain and Canada |
bicameral legislature | A legislature made up of two chambers |
social contract | A voluntary agreement of the people to allow government to secure the general welfare on their behalf |
political culture | The set of ideas and values a community holds about government and the political process |
liberty | Freedom to act in any way that does not compromise others' rights |
equality | All people are entitled to equal protection under the law |
capitalism | An economic system based on the private ownership of property, free markets, and freedom of contract |
ideology | A system of political ideas that are usu. rooted in religion/philosophy |
liberalism | Advocates active government to protect welfare/civil rights/etc. |
conservatism | Advocates "smaller" government, traditional lifestyles, and caution in responding to change |
progressivism | Another name for liberalism |
moderate | Holds beliefs that are neither extremely liberal or extremely conservative |
radical left | Advocates major changes in government to promote egalitarianism |
radical right | Includes reactionaries who would like to return to some set of past beliefs, as well as libertarians who accept no regulation of the economy or individuals' behavior |
ideologue | Someone who holds very strong political beliefs |
