Literary terms for Poetry Unit

Literary Termsdefinition
Allusion a reference to something external (the Bible, pop culture, etc.)
Alliteration the repetition of similar consonant sounds at the beginning of words
Assonance the repetition of similar vowel sounds at the beginnings of words
Ballad a type of poem written with refrain, repetition, and rhyme. this type of poem is used to tell a story.
Couplet when two lines of poetry rhyme (one is directly after the other)
Free Verse no specific rhyme scheme.
Hyperbole an exaggeration
Imagery when words paint a picture in your mind
Metaphor a comparison of two unlike things NOT using like or as
Mood the attitude or tone that the writer is trying to portray
Onomatopoeia a word that sounds like what it means (panting, zap, etc.)
Personification when an inanimate object is given human characteristics or qualities
Refrain a stanza that is repeated throughout a poem
Rhyme Repetition of accented vowel sounds, and all sounds following them, in words that are close together in a poem
Rhythm Musical quality in language produced by repetition
Simile a comparison of two unlike things using like or as
Symbol when one thing stands for another
Theme the overall message of a work
Tone the mood the author is trying to portray
