The Constitution of the United States the supreme law of the land
Preamble tells why the Constitution was written and begins with "We the People of the United States"
Bill of Rights First ten amendments to the Constitution
Amendment I (1) protects freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition
Amendment II (2) gives citizens the right to maintain state militias and the right to bear arms
Three Branches the US government is divided into the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches
Legislative Branch makes laws checks the executive branch by passing laws over a veto with a 2/3rds majority vote
Article I (1) Powers of Congress (Legislative branch) are listed here in the Constitution
Congress is divided into two houses (House of Representatives and Senate) must approve all appointments to the Supreme Court
House of Representatives members are elected based on state population every 2 years Total members: 435 The leader of the House is called Speaker of the House
US Senate each state has equal represenatation and members are elected every 6 years Total members: 100
Executive Branch carries out (executes laws) checks the legislative branch (Congress by vetoing bills)
Electoral Votes number of representatives (districts) plus number of senators for each state
Article II (2) Qualifications and powers of the President are listed here in the Constitution
President of the United States can be called Commander-in-Chief must be at least 35 years old can negotiate treaties, appoint judges (such as Supreme Court justices) veto bills CANNOT DECLARE WAR
Oath of Office Said by the President and the Vice President at the inauguration. Must be said in order for them to take office
Vice President takes the President's place if he/she is unable to serve a full term
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court usually administers the oath of office to the President on Inauguration Day and is part of the judicial branch
Article III (3) establishes the Supreme Court and Judicial Branch
Judicial Branch interprets laws (decides if laws are constitutional)
US Supreme Court Nine justices serve currently The justices serve for life
Amendments changes to the Constitution must be ratified by three fourths (3/4ths) of state legislatures
