These are the notes for why, motives, and advances from the Rosco videos.

QuestionAnswer
What was a reason people did not want to sail? They believed they would be eaten by sea monsters.
What was a second reason people did not want to sail? They believed that the world was flat and if you sailed too far you would fall off the Earth.
What was a third reason people did not to sail? Sailing was very expensive and it was hard to get funding.
What was a motive for people to sail and explore? The desire to find new sea routes to Asia, for the goods from that region were more desirable for trade.
What was a second motive for people to sail and explore? To ensure more profits, because of trade routes, desired spices were cheaper, because it passed through less hands.
What was a third motive for people to sail and explore? In search of wealth, fame, and glory that came with success.
What was a fourth motive for people to sail and explore? European monarchs wanted to break hold of trade routes from Muslims and Italians.
What was a fifth motive for people to sail and explore? The opportunity for new knowledge, some craved adventure
What was a sixth motive for people to sail and explore? The desire to spread Christianity.
What was a advance in the Renaissance period that benefited the Age of Exploration? Cartography, the art of map-making. People used Ptolemy's work and Mercato's improved lines of latitude/longitude to make more accurate maps. In the 1500's maps showed Earth as a sphere or ball and North and South America shown to be separated from Asia.
What was a second advance in Renaissance period that benefited the Age of Exploration? Improved ship design especially the caravel. The caravel was smaller, faster, easier to maneuver, could be used in shallow water, and the sail design can manipulate the wind.
What was a third advance in Renaissance period that benefited the Age of Exploration? Navigational tools developed which improved compasses and astrolabe (which helped figure distance north and south of the equator.
What was a fourth advance in Renaissance period that benefited the Age of Exploration? Improved weapons which gave the Europeans an advantage over the people they meet. Sailors could fire cannons and targets near shore and even do this without leaving the safety of their ships. Native weapons were no match to the European's guns.
