Layers of the Earth
Earth Layers
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Is the interior of the Earth always solid? | No, even though most of it is made from rocks, it is not always solid. |
What increases as you go further down into the Earth's layers? | Temperature and Pressure |
What causes the inner core to be a solid, when there are extreme temperatures down there? | The pressure from the above layers causes the mineral iron and nickel, that are in the core, to be solid. |
Which layer is the only liquid layer? | The Outer core |
What keeps the outer core a liquid? | Extreme temperatures and pressure keeps it a liquid. It is not subjected to as much pressure as the inner core. |
Which layer is a solid, but acts like a liquid under pressure and heat? | The mantle |
What moves through the mantle, and causes hot material from the core to rise up and the cool material near the crust to sink? | Convection Currents |
Which is less dense, Oceanic Crust or Continental Crust? | Continental Crust |
Where does the Lithosphere lay? | It is between the lower crust and the upper mantle. |
What mechanical layer is between the upper and lower mantle? | The Asthenosphere. |
Where is the Mesosphere located? | It is located in the liquid like lower part of the mantle. |
How many kilometers is the continental crust deep? | It is 10 to 7okm deep. |
Which is oceanic crust 5-7km deep or 10-100km deep? | It is 5-7km deep. |
Which mechanical layer is 10-200km deep? | The Lithosphere |
What causes seafloor spreading? | It happens when two plates move apart. |
What is a subduction zone? | It happens when one plates moves beneath another plate. |
