3.7 Soil Science News

Term /QuestionDefinition/Answer
Soil Being made up of minerals (rock, sand, clay, silt, air, water, and organic plant and animal) material.
How does soil form over time rock near the surface erodes into tiny pieces and mixes with organic matter (decayed plant and animal material) and inorganic matter (minerals and water).
Identify different components of soil rock fragments, clay, silt, sand, and humus.
rock fragments is sand sized particles of sand grain that is made up of multiple grains that are connected on the grain scale.
clay contains tiny particles of soil that hold water well and provides nutrients.
silt is made up of very small broken pieces of rock. Its particles are larger than clay and smaller than sand.
sand made up of small grains of worn-down rock, has few nutrients, and does not hold water well.
humus decayed matter in soil. Its adds nutrients to soil. It is located in the topsoil.
Topsoil humus mixed with mineral particles (this is where plants roots grow)
Subsoil mostly sand/silt and clay near the bottom
Bedrock the botton layer composed of rock
What does soil provied The support and nutrients necessary for plant growth.
Explain soil is a Soil is a natural resource necessary for plants and animals to survive. plants grow in soil. people and animals are dependent upon plants for food.
Erosion when topsoil is carried away by wind and water
Descibe way soil can be conserved ( used wisely) erosion can be stopped or slowed down by planting trees or plants that will hold the soil with their roots and keep it from washing or blowing away.
