Literary Terms

TermDefinition
flashback A scene in a story that returns the reader to a time in the past.
mood The feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for the reader. It is intended to shape the reader’s emotional response.
plot The action or events of a story.
prefix A word part that is added to the beginning of a base word that changes the sense or meaning of the root or base word.
stanza A recurring grouping of two or more verse lines in a poem. It is similar to a paragraph.
foreshadow A writer’s use of hints or clues to indicate events that will occur in a story.
legend A myth or traditional story, handed down from one generation to another.
metaphor A comparison between two unlike things that does not contain the words like or as.
suffix A word part that is added to the ending of a root word.
theme The main idea or message of a story.
