|---|---|
| -meteorology | study of atmospheric phenomena |
| -weather | current state of atmoshere |
| -climate | weather over a 30 year period |
| -air mass | a large body of air that takes on the characteristics of the area over which it forms |
| -air mass modification | when the air mass moves and changes with the weather conditions |
| -Coriolis effect | when moving particles are deflected right in the North and left in the South due to the rotation of Earth |
| -trade winds | basic wind zones or systems |
| -prevailing westerlies | wind system that flows at 30 and 60 degrees North and South. (winds move up in an E. direction.) |
| -polar easterlies | wind that blows at 60 latitude by the pole (flows from Northeast to Southeast.) |
| -jet stream | narrow bands of fast, high-altitude, westerly winds |
| -front | narrow region separating two air masses of different densities |
| -thermometer | measures temperature |
| -barometer | measures air pressure |
| -aneometer | measures wind speed |
| -hygrometer | measures relative humidity |
| -ceilometer | measures height of cloud layers and estimates percentage of sky covered with clouds |
| -radiosonde | controlled balloon carrying equipment with sensors to collect data |
| -Doppler effect | the change in wave frequency that occurs in energy ( sound... light) as sound carries away |
| -station model | a record of weather data for a particular site at a particular time |
| -ispoleths | lines to represent pressure that connect constant/equal values |
| -digital forecast | a forecast hat relies on numerical data |
| -analog forecast | forecast that compares current weather patterns to patterns that have occurred in the past |
