Missouri Plan | A method of choosing judges whereby the governor appoints a judge from a list prepared by a commission and then voters cast a vote as to whether they can stay in office or not |
Judicial Action commissions | Official government bodies that handle situations in which judges might not be doing their job well |
How are judges chosen? | They must run for election |
How are judges selected under the missouri Plan? | A list is created by a commission of judges, lawyers and normal people. The governor selects a judge from said list. In the next election voters vote yes or no on whether or not they want the and want the judge to stay in office for 12 years. |
How can judges lose their positions? | Judges can remove judges from positions at end of term. They may be impeached or recalled. Judicial action commissions that look into complaints about judges. |
What does "impeach" mean? | Impeached means to be accused of serious wrongdoing. |
What does the Attorney General do? | The state's legal officer. |

What are the state powers? | Set up local government, conduct elections, set up public school systems, oversee businesses, make laws that protect public health and safety. ( Ex. traffic laws) |
What are the government powers? | raise an army, declare war, coin money, regulate trade. |
what are the shared powers of the federal and state governments? | Collect taxes, borrow money, set up courts, enforce laws and punish lawbreakers. |

How do most states get their revenue? | Taxes (This includes sale, excise and income taxes.), bonds and lottery ticket sales. |
What is the 10th Amendment? | Declares that powers not given to the national government belong to the states. |
Some people have compared state executive officials to the presidents's cabinet. How are the different? | Voters select most state executive officials. Whereas the president can select his own cabinet. |
What are state executive agencies? Give some examples. | They do much of the work in running a state government. Examples are Departments of Health, revenue, and natural resources. |
What are categorical grants? | When states turn to congress for money there are two types of grants. Categorical grants being one. They come with "strings attached" They need to be used for a specific purpose. SUch as highway construction. |
What are block grants? | They are the other types of grants that the government gives the states. they are given for a more general purpose. |
What is the first level of the Maine state court system? | District courts. We have 31 of the around the state. Ex of cases: civil and criminal matters without a jury. Also: traffic family and matters, protection and small claims. |
What is the second level of the Maine state court system? | Superior Courts: 17 of them. Only place civil and criminal jury trials are held. |
What is the final level of the Maine state court system? | Last court of appeals. The Supreme Court. |
Does the state federal constitution offer more freedoms then state constitutions? | In some states, some constitutions offer greater rights than the federal one. |
