Ch.2 Questions

ANP 202 Ch.2

FrontBack
What does the DNA Molecule do? It specifies the genetic code or set of instructions needed to produce biological structures.
Which related molecule does DNA act with, and why do they interact? It interacts with RNA, and the purpose is to translate genetic instructions into proteins.
What is DNA stored in? Chromosomes.
What is the name of a segment of DNA that codes for a certain product? Gene.
What is the name for the different forms of genes present at a locus? Alleles.
Does the DNA molecule have the ability to make copies of itself? Yes.
What does DNA transmit? Genetic information from cell to cell and from generation to generation.
What is Meiosis? The process of sex cell formation that results in one of each chromosome pair being transmitted from parent to offspring.
Do you receive an equal amount of alleles from both of your parents, or do you get more from one or the other? An equal amount.
What is genotype? The genetic constitution of an individual.
What is phenotype? The physical manifestation of the genotype.
What does the relationship between genotype and phenotype depend on? Whether an allele is dominant, recessive, or codominant.
When is phenotype the result of the combined effect of genetics and environment? In complex physical traits.
What is the ultimate source of all genetic variation? Mutation.
Can mutations be something other than beneficial? Yes, a mutation can be beneficial, it can be harmful, and it can be neutral.
What does the effect of any mutation often depend on? Specific Environment conditions.
For any given allele, how often does a mutation occur? A mutation in any given allele is rare. But, given the large number of loci in many organisms, it is highly probable that each individual has at least one mutant allele.
What is Mendelian Genetics? Who is it named after? The science of genetic inheritance. Gregor Mendel.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
