Geography Vocabulary Part 1

TermDefinition
absolute location the precise place where a place is located on Earth
distortion a change in the shape, size or position of a place when it is shown on a map
map projection a way of representing the spherical Earth on a flat surface
relative location where a place is located in relation to another place
compass rose a diagram on a map that shows directions
cardinal directions the four main directions; north, south, east and west
intermediate directions the directions on a compass rose that are located between the cardinal directions
map legend a box or other display on a map that explains the meaning of symbols used on a map
map grid a system of imaginary lines that divides up the space on a map
global grid a system of imaginary lines used to divide the surface of Earth on maps
parallels of latitude imaginary lines around Earth that run parallel to the Equator
meridians of longitude imaginary lines between the North and South Poles that cross the Equator at right angles
Prime Meridian the meridian of longitude labeled 0 degrees and passes through Greenwich, England
climate the pattern of weather over a long period of time
economic activity any action that relates to the making, buying and selling of goods and services
landform any natural feature of Earth's surface that has a distinct shape-there are major (mountains) and minor (hills) examples
physical feature any natural characteristic of Earth's surface, such as landforms and bodies of water
climagraph a graphic that shows average temperature and precipitation in a place over a year
