6th grade description of landforms

TermDefinition
Archipelago A series of islands.
Bog A wet, spongy ground with soil composed mainly of decayed vegetable matter.
Delta A landform that is formed at the mouth of a river where that river flows into an ocean, sea, lake, or another river.
Fjord A long narrow arm of the sea bordered by river, steep cliffs: usually formed by glacier erosion.
Flood Plain An area of low-lying ground adjacent to a river.
Glacier A slowly moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compactation of snow.
Island A piece of land out in lake or the ocean.
Isthmus When the sea is separated by only a narrow strip of land.
Peninsula Land that sticks out into the sea.
Plain A large area of flat land with few trees.
Plateau An area of relatively level high ground.
Rifts Form fissures, cracks or breaks.
Strait The water between an island and the mainland
Tributary A river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake
