Unit 1: Study Stack

Characteristics of Life and Scientific Method

TermDefinition
6 characteristics of life Made of cells, responds, grow & develop, reproduce, made of chemicals, uses energy
4 basic needs of all living things water, food, living space, stable internal conditions (homeostasis)
Science a way of learning about the natural world
scientific inquiry the diverse way in which sceintists study the natural world
observation using one or more of your senses to gather information/data. Can use scientific tools as well to enhance the observation.
inference an interpretation of an observation that is based on evidence or prior knowledge
hypothesis a possible explanation for a set of observations or a scientific problem
problem a question that is asked about observations one might make
variables factors that can change in an experiment
independent (manipulated) variable the variable that "I" the scientist change to test a hypothesis
dependent (responding) variable the factor that changes because of the independent variable; the DATA collected or what is measured
controlled experiment all variables except ONE remain the same
control the set up in an experiment to which you compare results to; does not contain the independent variable
constant all the variables that remain the same
unicellular single-celled organisms
multicellular organisms composed of many cells
cell the basic unit of structure and function in an organism
organisms a living thing
development process of change that occurs during an organism's lifeto produce a more complex organism
stimulus a change in an organism's environment that causes the organism to react
respond an action or change in behavior
spontaneous generation the mistaken idea that living things could arise from non-living things
Francesco Redi Disproved spontaneous generation by placing rotting meat in an open container and a container with cloth over the top. Maggots only formed on the open container. Because no flies could lay eggs on the covered container, there were no maggots there.
Louis Pasteur Disproved spontaneous generationby bioling brith in a curved neck flask killing all bacteria. The necks let in oxygen but kept out bacteria. In another flask he cut the top off the flask leaving it exposed to air. Bacteria only grew in the flask opened.
autotroph makes its own food using photosynthesis
heterotroph cannot make their own food
homeostasis maintainance of stable internal conditions such as temperature adn glucose levels.
quantitative data date using numbers and scientific tools
qualitative data data using desciptions
data the results of an experiment

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
