Bill of Rights

TermDefinition
1st Amendment Freedom of: Religion, Speech, Press, Assembly,and Petition
2nd Amendment The right to keep and bear arms.
3rd Amendment Citizens can't be forced to provide housing for a soldier.
4th Amendment The police cannot come in and look around your home without a search warrant.
Search warrant This authorizes (allows) a police officer to search someone's house or property.
What a search warrant must state A search warrant must state the actual place to be searched. If it doesn't say bedroom, they can't go in.
Who is the only person the police can get a search warrant from? A judge - and only if the judge thinks there is a good reason.
Bench warrant This gives the police officer the right to come into a house and arrest someone.
5th Amendment You cannot be tried twice for the same crime.
6th Amendment Anyone accused of a crime has the right to be tried by a jury.
7th Amendment When a person sues another person for over $20 the case can be settled by a jury
8th Amendment Excessive bail or fines cannot be required. No cruel or unusual punishment is allowed.
