Latin America Government

Monarchy Government with a King, Queen, or Emperor
Absolute Monarchy Government where the King, Queen, or Emperor has complete power
Constitutional Monarchy Government where the King, Queen, or Emperor has little or no power
Democracy Government where the citizens elect at least some of their leaders and enjoy personal freedoms
Autocracy Government where one person has total control and citizens have few personal freedoms
Oligarchy Government where power is controlled by a small group and other citizens have few personal freedoms
Citizen Participation A measure of how much a country's citizens are allowed to participate in their government. A democracy gives its citizens a large role, and an autocracy and oligarchy give citizens almost no role.
Distribution of Power A measure of how government power is divided between a central government and local governments.
Unitary A government where government power is held by the central government and the local governments have little authority. Cuba and the UK are examples of this type of government.
Confederation A government where the authority of government is held by the local governments that then direct the central government. The United Nations is an example of this type.
Federation A government where power is shared between the Central government and the local government. The United States, Mexico, and Brazil are examples of this type.
