Legislative Branch

TermDefinition
Standing committee Permanent legislative panels established by the United States House of Representatives and United States Senate rules.
Select committee A committee, as of a legislative body, that is formed to examine and report on a specific bill or issue.
Joint committee A committee made up of members of both chambers of a bicameral legislature. In other contexts, it refers to a committee with members from more than one organization.
Conference committee Joint committee of a bicameral legislature, which is appointed by, and consists of, members of both chambers to resolve disagreements on a particular bill.
