What is the Land Ordinance of 1785? | It stated how the land in the west would be divided up into townships and land was sold for $1.00 per acre. |
What is the Land Ordinance of 1787? | This created a plan for admitting states in the Union from the Western Territories. |

How many states has to ratify the Constitution in order to put it into effect? | nine |
Article 1 of the Constitution deals with what branch of government? | The Legislative Branch |
What two houses make up our Congress? | The House of Representatives and the Senate. |
What are the powers of Congress? | They have the power to make laws, raise taxes, make rules for businesses, declare war and establish the lower courts. |
What are the qualifications in order to be elected to the House of Representatives? | You must be 25 years old (at least), be a citizen of the US for at least 7 years and live in the state you represent. |
In which house of Congress does a bill originate (begin)? | Either the House of Representatives or the Senate. |
The compromise to let the House of Representatives be based on population, helped what type of state? | The larger states with a higher population. |
What are the qualifications in order to be elected as a Senator for your state? | You have to be at least 30 years old, you have to live in the state you represent and have lived in the US for at least 9 years. |
How long is the term that a Senator serves in Congress? | Senators serve a 6 year term. |
What does the word "veto" mean? | A veto is when the President does not sign a law that has come from Congress. If Congress can get 2/3 of each house of vote for the law, they can overturn the veto. |
What do you call the draft of a law? | A bill |
What are the qualifications in order to become president? | You have to be at least 35 years old, you have to be a natural born citizen (you were born in the US) and you have to have lived in the US for at least 14 years. |
What makes up the "Executive Team"? | The White House Staff, the Special Councils and the Cabinet of 14 Secretaries. |
What are the jobs of the president? | Commander-in-chief of the armed forces, they carry out the laws, create a budget, creates foreign policy, make treaties and nominate positions like ambassadors, Supreme Court justices and Cabinet members. |
What is the purpose of the judicial branch of government? | The justices uphold the laws of the Constitution in court. |
What does it mean that the Supreme Court is both original and appellate jurisdiction? | This means that they can hear a new case for the first time (original court) and they can also hear court cases from a lower court (appellate jurisdiction). |
What types of courts are the inferior courts? | The district court and the court of appeals. |
How many Supreme Court Justices are appointed to the Supreme Court? | Nine. 1 Chief Justice and 8 Associate Justices. |
Which article deals with relations between states such as citizen rights and guarantees of having a state government? | Article 4 |
Which Article of the Constitution deals with how to amend the Constitution? | Article 5 |
What is the Supremacy Clause? | It says that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land. Which means that there is no law that is higher. |
What is the last article of the Constitution and what does it deal with? | The last article is Article 7 and it deals with how many states have to ratify the Constitution to make it legal. 9 of the 13 states had to ratify the Constitution, New Hampshire was the 9th state to ratify it. |
Which amendment to the Constitution says that you cannot be tried twice for the same crime and it guarantees you due process of the law. | Amendment 5 |

What does the first amendment to the Constitution guarantee that we have the right(s) of? | Right to freedom of religion, speech, freedom of assembly and the right to petition the government. |
How many amendments are there in the Bill of Rights? | The first 10 amendments are in the Bill of Rights. |
Which amendment in the Bill of Rights says we do not have to quarter soldiers in our homes? Why is this part of the original amendments? | Amendment 3 says we do not have to quarter soldiers. This comes from the colonists being forced to quarter British soldiers during the Revolutionary War through the Quartering Act (part of the Intolerable Acts). |
What is amendment number 4 in the Bill of Rights? | No unreasonable searches and seizures are allowed, police have to have a warrant. |
What does Amendment 7 give us the right to? | Trial by jury in a civil case. |
Which amendment guarantees us a fair and speedy trial? | Amendment 6 |
Why were there a set of amendments added onto our Constitution? | The Anti-Federalists would not go along with the Constitution without the addition of the Bill of Rights because they did not trust what they considered a strong central government. |
Who has the power to impeach high government officials such as the president? | Congress (the House of Representatives and the Senate). |
What two things were built into the Constitution to help protect any one group from having too much power? | Separation of powers and checks and balances. |
Why were the Articles of Confederation considered a weak plan? | The Articles of Confederation allowed the 13 states to run independent from the country as a whole, it did not have the power to collect tax money. |
What are "Checks and Balances" when talking about the Constitution for the United States? | These are rules that give each branch of government some power to control the power of the other branches. |
What does it mean to "impeach" the president? | When the House of Representatives accuse a high government official of doing wrong. |
What is separation of powers? | The system of government that gives some power to each branch of government instead of all power to one branch. |
What is an amendment? | A change to the Constitution. |
What does it mean to be Commander-in-chief? | This is another name for the president of the US, they are in charge of the army, navy, air force, marines and other branches of the military. |
