Nail Structure and Growth

What is the technical term for the nail? Onyx
What protein is in the nail plate? Keratin
What in a nails appearance show signs of good health? The nail is firm, flexible, shiny, slightly pink, with a smooth spotless surface and no hallows or wavy ridges.
What are the the basic parts of the nail unit? Nail bed, matrix, nail plate, cuticle, eponychium, hyponychium, specialized ligaments, and nail folds
What is the difference between the nail bed and the nail plate? The nail plate is the outer non living hard surface of the nail, the nail bed is the soft living tissue under the nail bed.
What part of the nail unit contains the nerve lymph and blood vessels? Nail bed
Why are nail technicians not allowed to cut the skin around the base of the nail plate? It is a practice outside the scope of the nail technician.
What is the matrix? The "mother" of the nail it is where the nail plate cells are formed.
What is the lunula? The visible part of the matrix that extends from underneath the living skin, It is a white half moon shape at the base of the nail.
What affects growth of the nails? Poor health, injury to the matrix, nail disorder or disease
What is a cuticle? dead colorless tissue attached to the nail plate
