Microsoft Office terms

TermDefinition
AutoComplete a program that predicts a word or phrase the user is typing before they have completed what they are typing
Backstage view a feature of Microsoft Office 2010 that allows users to manage documents in one place; located under the File tab
Badges when in Microsoft Office 2010, hitting the ALT key, these display Key Tips for all tabs
Command an instruction given to an electronic device that tells it to perform a given task; may be keys or buttons on the screen that trigger this
Dialog box a pop-up box that requests information for a document or displays current information
Groups a collection of commands that are similar and placed together on the ribbon; there are numerous in Office and under each tab; they are even customizable
Insertion point the point on the screen where the next text will be typed or inserted; the cursor that identifies this is the I-beam
Block Style this style in Office 2010 has no special changes; the words line up straight down the left margin with no indention
Connection Status menu the row at the bottom of a screen that shows information about a window or internet connection; in Word 2010, this may display commonly used commands
Dialog box launcher on the main ribbons in Office 2010, the tiny diagonal arrow in the corner; this provides more options in the group
I-beam the cursor in Office that allows the user to type or select text in the document; "it's all in the name"
Ribbon displays commands related to the type of document you have open; divided into 8 tabs with multiple groups
tabs areas of activity; contains several groups
menu list of options within commands
Mini toolbar small toolbar with popular commands that appears when you point to a selected text
shortcut menu list of useful commands displayed when you right click
Quick Access Toolbar contains the commands that are most frequently used; customizable
Save a blue floppy disk; this keeps your document
Save As when saving for the first time, this command allows you to choose the location of where you want to save the file
Undo goes back one command if you mess up
Redo repeats your last action/ command
KeyTips these replace some keyboard schortcuts used in previous versions of Word;press the ALT key
Print send documents to your printer
Settings options you can change about your document including orientation, collation and margins
Preview visually check your document for mistakes before printing
ScreenTip when hovering over a command on the ribbon, this pops up providing more information or help on the command
nonprinting characters symbols for certain formatting commands like paragraphs and indentions; these do not print
Word Wrap automatically wraps text to the next line
Open punctuation requires no punctuation after the salutation or the closing
Mixed punctuation requires a colon after the salutation and a comma after the closing
