Antebellum Vocab.

TermDefinition
Slave State A state that has allowed slavery
Free State A state that does not allow slavery
States' Rights The rights and powers are held first rather than the governmen's.
Missouri Compromise in 1820, Missouri became a state even though it crossed above the line. ( between the north and the south )
Underground Railroad A set of many secret trails leading slaves from the South to North. ( typically it was through houses and boats, and use at night, although they were used during the day )
Compromise of 1850 A set of five laws meant to settle disputes between the North and the South.
Popular Sovereignty Our right to vote.
Insurrection A violent uprising/rebellion against the authority or government.
Treason The crime of betraying one's own country.
Martyr A person who is killed because of their religious beliefs.
Secede To withdraw formally from a membership with a federal alliance.
Confederate States of America The Southern states which have been defined as slave states.
Platform A declared policy of a political party or group.
Moderate A person with less extreme views on a situation.
Mandate An official order to do something.
Agrarian A person who advocates the/a redistribution of a land or property.
