literary | writing that includes poems, plays, short stories, scripts, and novels |
third person point of veiw | when the narrator observes the actions and events of the story |
third person pronouns | he, she, him, her, they, and them (narrator does not refer to himself) |
antagonist | a character who is usually the Bad Guy in the story |
protagonist | a character who is usually the Good Guy in the story |
round character | fully developed personality showing many sides, and perhaps unpredictable behavior |
dynamic character | experiences a dramatic change in attitude or personality at some point |
idiom | a phrase or expression associated with a specific people or culture |
dialect | the idioms and pronunciations used in spoken and written language in different regions of a country |
legend | oral or written storytelling that may have some truth but focuses on exaggerated physical strength/courage |
myth | oral or written storytelling that may involve supernatural beings |
fable | oral or written storytelling that teaches a moral or lesson |
personification | giving human qualities to inanimate objects |
imigary | descriptive language using sensory words to paint a picture in the reader's mind |
simile | a comparison between two things using the word like or the word as |
metaphor | a comparison between two things (nouns) |
symbol | stands for or represents a person, place, thing, or idea |
hyperbole | an exaggeration or overstatement |
free verse | poetry without a set meter or rhyme |
verse | poetry with a set meter or rhyme |
cite evidence | to show facts or proof |
anecdote | a short, entertaining account of a person or event to help make a point |
arguement | written or spoken discussion offering different points of view |
claim | an individual's belief or opinion that should be supported by facts |
relevent reasons/evedence | the facts that support a claim |
credible sources | trusted and reliable documents |
topic | the subject being discussed or written about |
plagerize | CHEATER! (We will talk about this a lot.) |
paraphrase | to restate in your own words |
sequence | the order of events or steps |
audience | the particular group the writer is addressing |
research | to find and share information (simplified definition) |
bibliography | documented sources |
digital sources | a source that isn't printed |
qoute | to repeat from a book, speech, or digital source |
tone | the writer's attitude toward his or her subject |
