Rome Geography

QuestionAnswer
Who was Aeneas? A Trojan hero who formed an alliance with the Latins. Known as the "father of Rome"
Who were Romulus and Remus? Twin brothers, who, according to legend, founded Rome. Romulus killed Remus and named the city after himself.
What is a republic? A form of government in which people elect representatives.
Who are dictators? Rulers with almost absolute power.
Who was Cincinnatus? A famous Roman dictator who didn't care about power
Who were plebeians? Common people
Who were patricians? Nobles
How did Italy's geography help the rise of Rome? Italy's two major rivers provided trade routes and food. Climate allowed them to plant a variety of crops. Cities on hills were essential for defense. Italy being a peninsula provides excellent trading, and there was some flat land to farm on.
Why did the Romans make up stories and legends about their history? They wanted their people to be proud of the city's past.
Why is Aeneas sometimes referred to as "the father of Rome?" His descendents founded Rome, and he himself was the one who formed an alliance with the Latins.
Why did early Romans want to get rid of the monarchy? Plebeians wanted more say in how the government was run.
Why were the patricians so concerned when the plebeians elected their own council? The patricians feared that Rome would fall apart if the Plebeians and them couldn't cooperate.
What are the five seas surrounding the Italian Peninsula? Aegean sea, Mediterranean sea, Tyyrhenian sea, Ionian sea, and Ligurian sea.
What are the two major rivers located in Italy? The Po R. and the Tiber R.
What river is Rome located by? The Tiber R.
What three islands are near Italy? Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily.
It was feared that representatives would turn into ________? Dictators.
