Changing Role of Management

TermDefinition
Coach/Trainer The manager trains and develops employees' skills and fully utilises their talents.
Resource Provider Enables staff to carry out their job by providing all the necessary resources, e.g. finance, training equipment, new technology, extra staff.
Job enlargement Involves giving an employee a series of difficult tasks in which the level of difficulty and responsibility remains the same. This makes the job more interesting and challenging and increases employee satisfaction.
Job Rotation Widening the activities of workers by switching them between a number of work tasks. The idea is that a greater variety will lead to greater job satisfaction. It enhances employees' skills and experiences, allowing them to respond to change.
Job enrichment The employee is given a greater variety of task which differ in difficulty and level of responsibility. The aim is the growth and development of a full range of employeee skills and abilities.
Empowerment This means placing real power, responsibility, authority and decision-making responsibilities in teh hands of the employee who are in contact with the customers.
Total Quality Management This is a management style that demands commitment to create and maintain a culture of quality throughout an organisation.
Customer Orientation This means finding out customers' requirements and designing and producing a product or service to meet or exceed customers' requirements, needs and expectations.
Quality Assurance This attempts to guarantee that quality has been retained at all stages in teh production process.
Quality Circles Small groups of employees are brought together regularly to identify, discuss and develop ideas for solving problems relating to quality and efficiency.
Benchmarking This means working out how well a firm's performance stands up against standards set by the bst performing competitors in the market.
World class Manufacturing This term describes the world's leading businesses.
