QuestionAnswer
What did African Americans living in both the North and South have in common? They experienced discrimination and racism
How did the cotton gin affect the South and slavery? It increased the need for cotton and therefore increased the need for more slaves.
How did southerners react to Nat Turner's and other slave rebellions? It created fear and caused them to pass stricter and harsher slave codes governing slave behavior.
Legally how were slaves viewed in the USA? As property with no rights.
What role did Harriet Tubman have in the underground railroad? She was an escaped slave who returned to the South and guided many other slaves in the South to freedom.
What was the greatest fear of most slaves? To be separated from their families.
What was the role of the National Council of Colored People? This organization in the North protested the treatment of African Americans.
What did Denmark Vesey do? As a freed slave he lead an unsuccessful revolt
What did "invisible churches" do for slaves? It gave them a place to worship and give hope and comfort to one another.
What did segregation policies look like in the North? People of different races were separated in public
What is the most common way that slaves resisted slavery? Passive, secretive or quiet ways like pretending to be sick or damaging crops
Who led a violent rebellion to resist slavery? Nat Turner
What is the Underground Railroad? Secret routes and people who helped slaves escape slavery by traveling to the North
What did Southerners who did not own slaves think about slavery in the South? They still supported slavery because it was an important part of the South's economy
What sort of work did free African Americans in the South do? Farm labor, unskilled jobs and other low-paying jobs.
List some ways that slaves expressed their African culture and traditions. Art, Music, storytelling, quilts
what is an overseers job in the South? They supervise slaves for the master while they work
