Collective Rights are? rights given to specific groups in Canada
These groups are? - First Nations - Metis - Inuit - Francophone - Anglophones
Why do they get their own specials right? Because they make up the people who founded our Country
What are treaties and who made them? they are historical agreements made between First Nations and the Gov't.
These Treaties give the people? (HINT: There are 5 things) land to live on, yearly payments and benefits such as Health Care, Education and Hunting and Fishing Rights.
The treaties in Alberta are? Treaties 6,7,8
What was The Indian Act originally supposed to do? it gave the Gov't some control on the First Nations
What was the gov't's goal? to assimilate them into the European culture. They did this by making FN children attend Residential Schools. the schools restricted them from wearing any traditional clothing or perform any special ceremonies.
now that the Act had been revised 7 times, the FN can now do what? Vote and Govern their own affairs.
What is a Francophone? they are people whose first language was French
They are an Official what? An Official Language Minority
SECTION 23 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms states that if there is a large enough population in an area, then _________ ___________ must be built in that area. Language School
Those schools are? Public Funded
What does BILL 101 state? that signs in French speaking areas must have the French words to be more visible than the English words.
Under BILL 101, what right do Francophone parents not have? The right to educate their children in an Anglophone school.
what right do Metis' not have? Treaty Rights
what are pieces of paper that can be traded for land called? What First Nation group was issued these instead of Treaty Rights? Scrips. The Metis were given them.
Why do the Metis believe that it is their Inherent Right to have Land? because culturally, they depend on the land for hunting and fishing.
Today, the Metis have Hunting and Fishing rights without needing a licence. But what is one thing they wish they could do? Self-govern their own people.
What is Immigration? the process of people establishing homes and citizenship in a country that is not their native country.
What are the different kinds of Immigrants Canada accepts? (HINT: There are 3) Economic Class/ Family Class/ Refugees
Economic Class? What percentage is this group? They are skilled workers and business people who help our economy. 55%
Family Class? What percentage is this group? They have relatives already living in Canada and are being reunited with their families. 28%
Refugees? What percentage is this group? They are people who are seeking safety in Canada because they have poor living conditions back home. 13%
What is The Immigration and Refugee Protection Act? the legislation that outlines our immigration policies.

What 4 things does the point system cover for the gov't? Education, Health, Job Experience and fluency in English and/or French.

What do refugees have the right to when they want to live in Canada? The right to a hearing where they try to prove that they are actually refugees
