region an area with common characteristics such as soil, vegetation, climate, landforms, recreation, or economic opportunities
erosion the wearing away of land by the action of wind or water
fault a break in the Earth's crust that occurs when one part of Earth's surface folds or is thrust up over the surface next to it
elevation the height of something above sea level.
Fall Line the point at which hilly or mountainous lands meet the coastal plain.
aquifer an underground natural water storage tank
marsh a low-lying wet area that often has grasses growing in it
climate the average weather of a region over a long period of time
weather the day-to-day conditions and changes in the atmosphere
precipitation rain, hail, sleet, or snow
drought a prolonged period of dry weather
tornado a rotating column of air that reaches down from storm clouds to the ground
hurricane a tropical storm spawned when waters of 80 degrees Fahrenheit or more transform the heat energy of tropical waters into strong winds and heavy waves
wetland a low-lying land area where water lies close to the surface; a lowland that is influenced by tidal water flows
estuary the wide part of the river where its current meets tidal ebbs and flows
barrier island an island that lies off the coast and protects the mainland by blocking the strong winds and waves
swamp a low, sometimes spongy land formation, usually covered with water
Appalachian Mountains an ancient rounded-top mountain range running from northern Georgia to Canada along the east coast of North America
Appalachian Plateau region a geographic region of Georgia in the far northwestern corner of the state
Valley and Ridge region a geographic region of Georgia, just east of the Appalachian Plateau region
Blue Ridge Mountains region a geographic region of Georgia located in the northeastern part of the state
Brasstown Bald the tallest mountain in Georgia at 4,784 feet above sea level
Piedmont region a geographic region of Georgia that lies between Georgia's mountains and its Coastal Plain
Stone Mountain a granite dome rising 825 ft above the surrounding area East of Atlanta, Ga. It has the largest bas-relief carving in the world of Confederate leaders; Robert E. Lee, Andrew "Stonewall" Jackson, and Jefferson Davis.
Coastal Plain region a geographic region of Georgia that runs from the coast to the Piedmont region
Okefenokee Swamp a shallow peat-filled wetland on the Ga/Fla line. It is the largest "blackwater" swamp in North America. The name Okefenokee means "land of trembling earth" in Native American.
Golden Isles a group of four barrier islands (Jekyll island, Sea island, St. Simon's island, and Little St. Simon's island). In the 1900's the islands have become elite resorts for some of the wealthiest families in the United States.
