operating system | the software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals. |
hardware | tools, machinery, and other durable equipment. the machines, wiring, and other physical components of a computer or other electronic system. |
digital | (of signals or data) expressed as series of the digits 0 and 1, typically represented by values of a physical quantity such as voltage or magnetic polarization. |
hard drive | a high-capacity, self-contained storage device containing a read-write mechanism plus one or more hard disks, inside a sealed unit. Also called <i>hard disk drive</i>. |
input | what is put in, taken in, or operated on by any process or system. |
output | the amount of something produced by a person, machine, or industry. |
external storage device | secondary storage. |
read-only memory (ROM) | memory read at high speed but not capable of being changed by program instructions. |
